Your Questions About Lighting Fixtures

Donald asks…
Can you paint the metal on lighting fixtures?
I have two wall sconces that are great looking shape/design wise, but they look dated because of it’s gold/brass color. Can I paint the metal parts of these fixtures?

Sonny answers:
Sure. Clean em good first with TSP (trisodium phosphate), then cans of metal spray primer, and a compatable top coat spray. You’ll likely be taking away from the value of the sconces, but if they’ll match your decor, what the hey.
You might want to consider using an antiquing technique for the finish coat as well (paint sconce with a dark color after your primary color has dried, then wipe off the high points while still wet — looks sweet).
You could even go overboard & finish with acrylic accenting using a drybrush technique on the high points?
