Can You Use 50w Track Lights In A 35w Track Lighting Rail?
Can you put 50w track lights into a 35w track lighting rail or will it burn out the transformer?
Had a track lighting setup in the kitchen…wanted a little more light so I got some 50w bulbs that were the same size as the 35w bulbs currently in the track lighting rail.
I switched two the of the 35w bulbs for 50w bulbs, now the whole thing won’t turn on. I took those out and tried flipping the breakers in the panel box, but nothing will get them to come on again.
Did I burn out the transformer?
I don’t have the spec sheet for the rail sadly. It came with the condo. I think it’s an IKEA LEDING rail though, but I can’t tell for sure.

You either burned out the transformer or it has a built in fuse to prevent an overcurrent condition.
IS your old lamps low voltage? track system!
Is it fluorescent or incandescent lighting?
If it has a transformer, then it is a low voltage light fixture or fluorescent.
So first, put your 35w back in and see if it lights. If nothing happens, pull the fixture down and examine the wiring. The transformer should have a buss fuse, check to see that it is closed. That should be easy to see, or read 0 ohms on your meter. The higher wattage bulbs may have burned your wires. Examine them to make sure there are no shorts. Put an ohmmeter to the transformer. you should read no more than about 2 ohms on the low side and no more than about 10 ohms on the high side.
Lamps are fairly cheap, and very easy to replace. So unless you feel like tinkering, just pitch it and get a new fixture.
